What is Cross-Polarisation?

Cross-polarisation is a photographic technique (often used in the Dental industry and for 3D Scanning/Photogrammetry in the CGI industry) that uses two polarising filters (one on your light source and one on the camera lens), oriented perpendicular (90°) to each other, to eliminate glare and specular reflections from your photographs, leaving only the true surface colours of your subject. 

What is Cross-Polarisation Used For?

Cross-Polarised photography completely removes specular lighting from your photograph, allowing for accurate shade matching, or visualising the subsurface structures of teeth in dentistry, or for capturing accurate albedo/colour maps for texturing in the CGI industry.

How It's Done?

First, clip the polarising filter onto your MF-R76-Series macro ring flash. Once the filter is in place, look at your subject through the camera and slowly rotate the filter on your lens. Continue adjusting it until the specular reflections disappear. When those reflections are no longer visible, everything is set, and you’re ready to go.
